In collaboration with the The Centre for Integration of Foreigners, we prepare up to 24 students from different countries at the age of 14 to 20 for study at a Czech secondary school. The one-year preparatory course for secondary school studies is aimed at developing the language skills needed to master Czech language at secondary school and become more familiar with culture and life in the Czech Republic. The course is free of charge and is being implemented as part of the project Don’t give up! funded by The Velux Foundations.
The course is designed for young migrants, regardless of the type of stay and country of origin, who want to study at a secondary school in the Czech Republic, but their knowledge of Czech is insufficient (level A0 – beginners). The requirement for participation is a completed elementary school (9 years). Applicants for the course can live outside of Prague. You cannot obtain a residence permit for the purpose of study on the grounds of participation in this course.
Lessons take place throughout the school year on the premises of META, o.p.s. Praha 3, Žerotínova 35 and respect holidays and bank holidays.
Lessons and all activities are aimed at preparing students for studies at secondary school, but not for a specific admission procedure. We emphasize the development of communication, grammar and vocabulary up to level B1-2, which enables independent participation in life and study. We also focus on topics and vocabulary of primary school subjects (Czech language, biology, geography, history, physics, chemistry, citizenship education, mathematics), development of study skills (cooperation, discussion, problem solving, information searching, etc.) and meeting culture and life in the Czech Republic.
Those interested in this course can apply via the online here.
The capacity is limited. Applicants must go through a two-round selection process.
A personal meeting with a social worker will follow after registration: motivational interview and basic test of Czech language. The aim of this round is to find out if the candidate fulfill the basic requirements for participation in the course. If the requirements are met, the candidate will be invited to the second round. This round have the form of model lesson of Czech language. The main purpose of this meeting is to get to know the candidate better, find out his motivation and the possibilities to match his needs with the rest of the class.
The course itself is free of charge. You only pay 500 CZK to the class fund per half-year and the deposit of 2 500 CZK per half-year. The deposit will be refunded in full if the student fullfill the compulsory attendance.
In justified cases, non-Prague candidates may apply for a commuter/ accommodation allowance. More information will be provided by social workers.
