Conference Pupils with a different mother tongue in schools – opportunities for a change
On Thursday, 20 October 2016, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, in cooperation with the organisation People in need, o.p.s. and with the Prague City Hall, we held a conference Žáci s odlišným mateřským jazykem ve školách – příležitosti ke změně (Pupils with a different mother tongue in schools – opportunities for a change) in the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague.
The conference was attended by 97 representatives of experts in this field: headmasters and teachers from all levels of schools, representatives of school establishers (regional authorities and city districts), representatives of educational and psychological counselling centres and representatives of universities and non-profit organisations.
The topic of the conference was the current conditions for pedagogical work with children and pupils with a different mother tongue in schools. The subject of most of the speeches and discussion was the so-called inclusive amendment of the education law, which came into force in September 2016. A truly lively debate broke out about the application of the amendment in real life. It should be noted that experience of school representatives with the education of children and pupils with a DMT has been rather negative so far, they emphasized the need of a better cooperation with educational and psychological counselling centres. The director of the Educational and Psychological Counselling Centre for Prague 10 also shared her opinion. Because even the centres are in a complicated situation since they are lacking a precise methodical instruction from the ministry concerning the amendment and also relevant diagnostic tools.

The conference was realised within the fulfilment of the action plan of the Policy of the City of Prague for Integration of Foreign Nationals and it was a part of the event Week for Inclusion as well.
